About cumberland

Cumberland is a unitary authority area in Cumbria, formed in 2023 from the merger of Allerdale, Carlisle, and Copeland districts, encompassing the northern and western Lake District National Park, the Solway Coast, the historic city of Carlisle, and the towns of Workington, Whitehaven, Keswick, and Cockermouth. This historically significant area features the northern fells, the Cumbrian coast, Hadrian's Wall, and a rich industrial and literary heritage. The climate varies from the mild coastal conditions of the Solway to the upland weather of the Lake District fells, with significant rainfall and winter snow on higher ground. Culturally, Cumberland holds exceptional heritage significance with the city of Carlisle (historic border city with its magnificent Norman castle, cathedral, and role as the administrative and commercial centre of the area), the northern Lake District (including Keswick, Derwentwater, and the Borrowdale Valley, among England's most beautiful landscapes), and the western coast with its industrial heritage (Whitehaven's Georgian planned town and harbour, Workington's steelmaking heritage, and the Sellafield nuclear site). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Hadrian's Wall (UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Roman frontier running through the north of the district), Carlisle Castle (one of England's most important border fortresses), the Wordsworth connections (the poet was born in Cockermouth, and Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum at Grasmere are nearby), and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farmhouse at Near Sawrey. The Lake District National Park offers world-class walking, climbing, and scenery with famous fells including Skiddaw, Blencathra, and Helvellyn, and lakes including Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, and Buttermere. The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides spectacular coastal scenery and birdlife while the western coast offers views across to Scotland. The Rheged centre and the Beacon museum celebrate local heritage while the area's literary and artistic connections attract visitors from worldwide. Boundary GIS data for Cumberland Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this World Heritage landscape (both Lake District and Hadrian's Wall), protecting the northern Lake District, preserving the unique border and industrial heritage, and supporting sustainable tourism across this historically rich Cumbrian area.
