About lancaster

Lancaster is a local government district and city in Lancashire, encompassing the historic city of Lancaster, the coastal resort of Morecambe, the towns of Carnforth and Heysham, and numerous villages within an area stretching from the Forest of Bowland to Morecambe Bay. This diverse district features one of northern England's most historic cities, traditional seaside resort character, and spectacular coastal and inland landscapes. The climate is maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and strong coastal influences with fresh sea breezes from Morecambe Bay. Culturally, Lancaster holds exceptional historical significance as the county town of Lancashire with its magnificent Norman castle (still used as a court and prison), the Priory Church, the Georgian architecture of the city centre, and Lancaster University (one of the UK's leading research universities). The area preserves important heritage including Lancaster Castle, the Ashton Memorial (Edwardian folly in Williamson Park), the Judges' Lodgings museum, and the Lune Millennium Bridge. Morecambe developed as a classic seaside resort with its promenade, art deco Midland Hotel, and the famous statue of Eric Morecambe (the town's most famous son). Heysham's unique heritage includes its pre-Norman chapels and Viking connections while Carnforth's railway station gained fame through the film Brief Encounter. The district's coastline includes Morecambe Bay with its shifting sands and birdlife while the Forest of Bowland AONB extends into the eastern parts. Boundary GIS data for Lancaster City Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this historic city, preserving Lancaster Castle's heritage, supporting seaside regeneration in Morecambe, and protecting the unique landscapes of Morecambe Bay and the Forest of Bowland.
