About coventry
Coventry is a metropolitan borough and city in the West Midlands, historically the heart of the English motor industry and a city of international significance for peace and reconciliation. Located east of Birmingham, Coventry encompasses the city center, extensive suburbs, and surrounding communities including Allesley and Keresley within an area shaped by medieval history, industrial revolution, and twentieth-century reconstruction. The climate is temperate maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and typical Midlands conditions slightly drier than western areas. Culturally, Coventry holds unique significance as a city of peace and reconciliation, symbolized by the ruins of the medieval Coventry Cathedral (destroyed in WWII Blitz) standing alongside the modern cathedral designed by Sir Basil Spence. The area preserves important heritage including St Mary's Guildhall (medieval), the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, and extensive motor industry history at the Coventry Transport Museum (home to the world speed record-breaking cars). Coventry's two universities contribute to its youthful energy while the city's diverse communities include significant South Asian populations. The city's postwar reconstruction created distinctive architecture while recent regeneration has transformed the city center with new developments including the Friargate scheme. Boundary GIS data for Coventry City Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this historically significant city, supporting the motor industry heritage preservation, and planning continued regeneration as UK City of Culture 2021.
