About wirral

Wirral is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside occupying the Wirral Peninsula between the River Mersey and River Dee, encompassing towns including Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Heswall, and West Kirby within an area of dramatic coastline and strong maritime character. This unique peninsula features the Mersey ferry terminals, historic Port Sunlight, and some of northwest England's most desirable coastal communities. The climate is temperate maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and strong coastal influences with less frost than inland areas. Culturally, Wirral maintains distinctive identity separate from both Liverpool and Cheshire, with strong maritime heritage from shipbuilding at Birkenhead's Cammell Laird yard (which built famous vessels including the Mauretania). The area preserves exceptional heritage including Port Sunlight (the magnificent model village built by Lever Brothers for soap factory workers), Birkenhead Park (the first publicly funded park in Britain, designed by Joseph Paxton and inspiration for New York's Central Park), and numerous historic ferry terminals. The peninsula's coastal resorts including New Brighton, West Kirby, and Hoylake attract visitors with beaches, sailing, and views across to North Wales. Wirral's communities maintain distinct identities from elegant Heswall to working-class Birkenhead while the Mersey tunnels connect to Liverpool. Boundary GIS data for Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, essential for managing this unique peninsula, preserving world-class heritage at Port Sunlight and Birkenhead Park, and supporting coastal communities.
