About arun
Arun is a local government district in West Sussex, named after the River Arun which flows through it, encompassing the coastal towns of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, the inland market town of Arundel, and numerous villages within an area stretching from the English Channel to the South Downs. This diverse district features dramatic contrasts between seaside resorts, the historic castle town of Arundel, and protected chalk downland landscapes. The climate is one of the sunniest in the UK with mild winters, warm summers, lower rainfall than national average, and exceptional sunshine hours, making Bognor Regis famous as a traditional seaside resort. Culturally, Arun maintains strong coastal identity with Bognor Regis's traditional seaside attractions (including its pier and Butlin's resort) and Littlehampton's regenerated East Beach with its modernist café and coastal walks. The area preserves exceptional heritage including Arundel Castle (seat of the Duke of Norfolk, one of England's greatest medieval castles), Arundel Cathedral, and the WWT Wetland Centre at Arundel. The district's villages feature traditional Sussex character while the South Downs National Park offers spectacular walking including the South Downs Way. Bognor Regis's royal connections (King George V convalesced here, giving it the 'Regis' suffix) add historical interest while the annual International Bognor Birdman competition attracts visitors. Boundary GIS data for Arun District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting coastal management, heritage preservation at Arundel Castle, and sustainable tourism development in this sunny West Sussex district.
