About gravesham

Gravesham is a local government district and borough in Kent, encompassing the Thames-side town of Gravesend, the historic town of Northfleet, and surrounding villages including Meopham, Higham, and Shorne within an area of the Thames Estuary and North Downs. This Thames-side district features the last crossing of the Thames before the sea, strong maritime heritage, and attractive rural areas. The climate is typical of southeast England with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and warmer, drier conditions than UK average, with the Thames creating local conditions. Culturally, Gravesham maintains strong maritime identity with Gravesend's historic river frontage (including the town pier, one of the world's oldest surviving cast-iron piers), its connections to Pocahontas (who is buried at St George's Church), and its role as the departure point for Thames sailing barges and pilot boats. The area preserves important heritage including the historic High Street with its coaching inns, Chalk's Dickens connections (the marshes inspired Great Expectations), and the remains of the Thames defences. Northfleet's industrial heritage (including paper-making and cement works) is being transformed with new riverside developments. The district's villages feature traditional Kentish character with Meopham's green, Shorne's country park, and Cobham's famous almshouses and Cobham Hall (historic school). The Thames Path follows the river providing walking and views of the Thames and its shipping. The district's position on the High Speed 1 railway provides excellent transport links to London while its rural areas offer attractive countryside. Boundary GIS data for Gravesham Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting maritime heritage preservation at Gravesend, riverside regeneration, and protection of the Thames-side landscape and villages.
