About tendring
Tendring is a local government district in Essex, encompassing the coastal towns of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, and Walton-on-the-Naze, along with the historic port of Harwich and numerous villages within the Tendring Peninsula. This coastal district features some of Essex's most traditional seaside resorts, important maritime heritage, and attractive countryside including parts of the Dedham Vale AONB. The climate is maritime with mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and fresh sea breezes, with more sunshine than western areas typical of the East Anglian coast. Culturally, Tendring maintains strong seaside identity with Clacton-on-Sea's traditional resort character (its pier, beach, and amusements, developed as a Victorian resort and now a popular holiday destination), Frinton-on-Sea's exclusive character (with its golf course, lack of amusements, and reputation for quiet elegance), and Walton-on-the-Naze's pier, Naze tower, and beach. The area preserves important heritage including Harwich's magnificent maritime heritage (one of England's most historic ports, with its connections to the Mayflower, its High Lighthouse, the Ha'penny Pier, and the Electric Palace cinema (one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas still operating)), the Naze's geological importance (eroding cliffs revealing fossils), and the Essex Sunshine Coast. The district's northern parts extend into the Dedham Vale AONB (Constable Country) with its beautiful Stour Valley landscapes. The villages feature traditional Essex character with weatherboarded cottages and medieval churches while the coastline offers walking along the Essex Way. Tendring's seaside towns face regeneration challenges while maintaining their traditional character and appeal. Boundary GIS data for Tendring District Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting seaside regeneration, maritime heritage preservation at Harwich, coastal management including the eroding Naze, and protection of the Dedham Vale AONB fringe.
