About stockton-on-tees

Stockton-on-Tees is a unitary authority and borough in County Durham and North Yorkshire, formed in 1996, encompassing the town of Stockton-on-Tees, the industrial town of Billingham, the market town of Yarm, and the villages of the Tees Valley. This diverse area features the Tees estuary, heavy industry (including chemical works and the former ICI complex at Billingham), and attractive historic towns. The climate is typical of northeast England with cool temperatures, moderate rainfall, and the Tees estuary creating local conditions. Culturally, Stockton-on-Tees maintains strong identity with its historic market town character (Stockton's High Street is one of the widest in England, with its Georgian and Victorian architecture, and the town has a famous market charter dating to 1310). The area preserves important heritage including Preston Hall (Georgian mansion with museum and park), the Stockton Flyer (iconic footbridge over the A66), and the Tees Barrage (white water course and river control structure). Yarm is an attractive Georgian market town with its cobbled High Street, historic buildings, and position on the Tees. Billingham's industrial heritage (including the former ICI works, once one of the world's largest chemical complexes) is celebrated at the Billingham Forum and the town's planned postwar centre. Stockton's role as a commercial centre includes the Wellington Square shopping centre and the Castlegate Quay. The Tees provides recreational opportunities with the Teesdale Way and the Tees Barrage white water course (used for the 2012 Olympics canoeing events). Stockton International Riverside Festival (one of the UK's largest outdoor arts festivals) attracts visitors annually. The district's excellent transport links (including A19 and A66, and mainline railway) support its economic role. Stockton's famous son, John Walker (inventor of the friction match), is commemorated in the town. The area's combination of historic towns, industrial heritage, and riverside regeneration creates its distinctive character. Boundary GIS data for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is available for download in GeoJSON and KML formats, supporting the preservation of historic towns, management of the Tees estuary and industrial heritage, and regeneration of this Tees Valley area.
